About the role

Within Rail Control Solutions, Region Central Systems Engineering activities are managed by the Application Engineering Team, where customer specific & and national requirements are evaluated and analysed.

Systems / Application Engineering is a key activity to the successful planning and execution of customer projects starting already during bid phase.

Systems /Application Engineers act as a bridge between the users of the system (external or internal customers), the technical project coreteam and the EAPD department (including HW and SW Designers, Testers and Validators).

Systems /Application Engineers have an interdisciplinary expertise in railway engineering. By using their extensive knowledge of the railway process, railway standards, ERTMS/ETCS technology, complete signalling systems, safety engineering, vehicles engineering and by working in close collaboration with the users, Systems /Application Engineers strive to understand the users’ operational needs better than the users themselves. By combining this understanding with their know-how, Systems /Application Engineers design and specify technical solutions that RCS can commit to successfully deliver on schedule.

Systems /Application Engineers have to manage the real needs of the project and product stakeholders, including customers and end users with the responsibility to elicit, analyze, validate, specify, verify and manage the requirements.

Fulfilment and statement of compliance to customer requirements.

Choice of design and functionality to meet customer and safety requirements.

System architecture and technical solution for products and projects.

Selection of products and subsystems (including selection of supplier together with supply management).

Use and configuration of internal products.

Definition of technical interfaces (towards external entities (e.g. vehicle control equipment).

Requirements Engineering, Requirements Management (i.e. definition of requirements for developers).

Evaluation of non-conformities.


Expertise in railway signalling processes and solutions (both onboard and trackside components).

Extensive knowledge of functionality and architecture of railway systems, especially ERTMS/ETCS and regional STMs.

Extensive knowledge of how customers operate signalling systems and products and which operational and functional needs the systems shall satisfy.

Understanding of railway vehicles and their interfaces to our onboard systems.

Knowledge of applicable standards and regulations.

Master of Science in Engineering or systems science or equivalent experience.

Experience in requirement management tools like DOORS and knowledge in modeling tools and languages like SysML/UML highly desired.
